DEDICATED TO REVIVING AND REBUILDING LOCAL AND ALTERNATIVE NEWS SOURCES IN THE UNITED STATES AND ABROAD.
One fifth of Americans are living in areas with no local news publication, or with only one struggling publication.
Newsroom employment in the United States declined 26% between 2008 and 2020, but the growth at digital publishers did not match this decline. The number of full-time state government reporters in the United States declined 34% between 2014 and 20223, with print newspapers still making up the vast majority of statehouse reporters.
The closure of newspapers leads to marked decline in public funding and economic growth.
At the same time, people across the country and around the world are more worried about disinformation than ever.
Nominate a community, publication or news station in need with Independent News Revival Guild (INRG) survey system. INRG staff will then reach out to publications in the nominated area– every newspaper, magazine, radio and television station we can find in the vicinity, as long as they publish news of any kind– and gauge their interest in our program. Interested publications should submit a survey about their needs on the INRG website.
INRG will survey the community those publications serve to gauge their unique needs. INRG is dedicated to surveying the entire breadth of communities– regardless of political associations– to assess the strengths of local news in the area, and how it can be improved. INRG staff will review the surveys and complete an internal review of the organization’s objective content quality, business structure and relationships to their readership.
Participant’s publication leadership will meet with INRG program managers to discuss potential action plans. Publications can select from a variety of news revival programs to fit their individual needs. All of our programs involve extensive partnerships between journalism educators, community members and publications.
